Application of micro:bit in Computer Science Teaching and Basics of AI Application in Education

The Pedagogical Institute of Zenica, in cooperation with the International Organization British Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina, organized a two-day seminar in Zenica on December 19–20, 2025, for primary school computer science teachers as part of the project “Schools for the 21st Century.” The seminar focused on enhancing critical thinking and digital skills through practical knowledge of coding and the use of artificial intelligence tools in teaching.

The seminar “Application of micro:bit in Computer Science Teaching and Basics of AI Application in Education” supported computer science teachers in implementing the new Curriculum and Framework Program for primary schools. The ultimate goal is to enable students to learn in a fun, interactive, and innovative way, while improving their teamwork and creativity skills, thereby ensuring better employment prospects in the future.

In the introductory part of the seminar, participants were addressed by Aida Salkić, Director of the Pedagogical Institute of Zenica, and Amila Karavdić, Director for Cultural Cooperation of the British Council Sarajevo, followed by the introduction of lecturers and highly engaged work of participants.

On the first day of the seminar, discussions focused on the basic functions of the micro:bit, programming examples, wireless communication, implementation of the micro:bit, and examples of training machine learning models. Teachers received a Microbit V2 device for programming, intended for use in project activities to help students develop programming, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

On the second day of training, the focus was on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, prompting, AI assistance in lesson preparation, and the creation of teaching materials. Special emphasis was placed on the responsible use of artificial intelligence-data protection, avoiding plagiarism, and raising students’ awareness of the ethical aspects of technology. Through practical examples and group work, teachers exchanged ideas on how AI can enrich teaching and make it more engaging and interactive.

The seminar represents an important step toward modernizing computer science education in primary schools. Teachers had the opportunity to develop new teaching methods and create an innovative educational environment through practical examples, work with micro:bit devices, and learning the basics of AI application.

The activity coordinators from the Pedagogical Institute of Zenica were educational advisors: Aldiana Nuhanović, Amila Herceg-Hodžić, and Aldijana Salić.
