Today, June 3, 2024, a delegation from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by Deputy Head of Mission Thomas Busch, visited the Zenica-Doboj Canton. The purpose of this visit was focused on exchanging information and experiences related to the reform of curricula with representatives of the Government of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, the Pedagogical Institute Zenica, and the Union, with the aim of reviewing the ongoing reform of curricula (subject curricula) being implemented in this canton with the support of the OSCE Mission since 2020.
The project “Quality Education through Curricular Reform,” initiated in 2020, included support from the OSCE Mission in enhancing the quality and inclusiveness of education through the development of subject curricula for primary and secondary general education based on learning outcomes, with support from the embassies of the Republic of Italy and the Kingdom of Norway. The reform is aimed at building functional rather than merely encyclopedic knowledge.
Before visiting the Primary School “Ahmed Muradbegović” in Zenica, the delegation met with the Prime Minister of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Nezir Pivić, the Minister of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Mirza Mušija, the Director of the Pedagogical Institute Zenica, Aida Salkić, and the President of the Independent Union of Primary Education and Upbringing of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Selvedin Šatorović.
Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission Thomas Busch expressed satisfaction with the reforms implemented in the Zenica-Doboj Canton and advocated for this canton to be a partner of the OSCE, serving as a model for all other cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He emphasized that there are available models of financial support for reforms in the EU, particularly in the field of education, which is one of the priorities of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the current head of the mission, Brian Aggeler.
Representatives of the OSCE Mission announced continued support for curricular reforms in Bosnia and Herzegovina as one of the ways to stop the emigration of young people and restore trust in the educational system. Additionally, as a separate project, support will be provided to pedagogical institutes in the development and digitization of educational materials for teachers, to ensure the quality of learning outcomes.
