STRENGTHENING THE UNDERSTANDING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CONVENTION ON THE BAN OF ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

At the invitation of the Center for the Removal of Mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BHMAC), the Zenica Pedagogical Institute participated in a two-day conference entitled “Strengthening the understanding and implementation of the Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel mines in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. The conference was held in Ilidža on February 17 and 18, 2026, and was organized by BHMAC and the Convention Implementation Support Unit (ISU), with the support of the Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the financial support of the global project adopted by the Council of the European Union.

This significant event brought together representatives of the authorities, the international community, the education sector and civil society, enabling a dialogue on the implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Landmines and the challenges Bosnia and Herzegovina faces in the mine removal process. The aim of the conference was to provide support to BHMAC in the preparation of a comprehensive, accurate and well-founded Request for an extension of the deadline based on Article 5 of the Convention.

On the second day of the conference, the representative of the Zenica Pedagogical Institute, Mirza Čehajić, participated in a panel discussion entitled “Mine warning and Action Plan from Reap-Angkor – challenges and learning experiences”. On that occasion, the experiences of the Zenica-Doboj canton in the introduction and implementation of the mine warning program in ward communities from the 5th to the 9th grade of primary schools were presented. The discussion emphasized the importance of a systemic approach to the education of children and youth, institutional cooperation with the education sector, and continuous work with at-risk communities.
