Training of school teams to support piloting subject curricula

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Zenica-Doboj Canton and the Pedagogical Institute Zenica, as an administrative organization within this ministry, in cooperation with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe – OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina, have implemented the “Quality Education through Curricular Reform” Project in the past period. This project included support from the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina to the relevant Ministry in terms of improving the quality and inclusiveness of education through the development of subject curricula for primary and secondary general education (grammar schools) based on learning outcomes, in accordance with the document Common Core Curriculum Defined on Learning Outcomes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was adopted in 2018 by the Agency for Preschool, Primary and Secondary Education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Within the framework of the aforementioned project, 53 subject curricula for regular primary schools and grammar schools based on learning outcomes were developed, which was made known to the wider, scientific and professional public. Access to the subject curricula documents for regular primary schools and grammar schools, which were created as a result of activities within the project “Quality Education through Curricular Reform”, is possible through the Educational Platform of the Pedagogical Institute Zenica http://pedzavodzenica.ba, which was created as a kind of digital support for reform processes in the field of education in the Zenica-Doboj Canton with a special focus on the segment of professional development of educational professionals. 

In the 2022/2023 school year, the last project activity took place within the previously mentioned project, i.e. piloting subject curricula according to the successive model (in the 1st and 6th grades of primary school, and in the 1st and 3rd grades of grammar schools). 35 schools participated in this project activity (29 regular primary schools, 5 grammar schools and 1 secondary vocational school that has a grammar school department). In the 2023/2024 school year, the successive application of curricula (subject curricula) continued through experimental application of the same in 54 regular primary schools, 8 grammar schools and 2 secondary vocational schools that have grammar schools (in the 1st and 6th grade of primary school and 1st and 3rd grade of grammar school), and the continuation of experimental application, i.e. piloting in primary schools and grammar schools/ secondary vocational schools that have a grammar schools in their composition, and which were included in the piloting phase in the 2022/2023 school year (selected classes of 2nd and 7th grade of elementary school, or 2nd and 4th grade of grammar school).

Pedagogical Institute Zenica with the support of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 22 and 23 November 2023. year, realizes a two-day training of school teams to support the piloting – experimental application of subject curricula. The training covered 200 education professionals from 65 regular primary schools, grammar schools/ secondary vocational schools that apply subject curricula based on learning outcomes. This is one of a series of planned trainings aimed at supporting the continuous professional development of teachers, professional associates and school management. Upon completion of this training, in January 2024, replication trainings are planned in the aforementioned schools, which is one of the models of internal professional development that promotes teamwork, mentoring support, professional learning communities, integrated and project planning based on learning outcomes. 

The training was attended by Ivo Lupis – Director of the Human Dimension Department, Mirza Mušija – Minister of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Zenica-Doboj Canton and Selvedin Šatorović – President of the Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 

The training for the participants is implemented by PhD Boris Jokić – Director of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, PhD Jasna Kovačević from the Faculty of Economics, University of Sarajevo, PhD Alica Arnaut and PhD Amer Ćaro from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zenica, who, together with the Expert Team of the Pedagogical Institute Zenica, participated in various phases of the project “Quality Education through Curricular Reform” which was implemented in the period from 2020 to 2022 in the Zenica-Doboj Canton.  You can find out more about this event via the links: https://www.zenicablog.com/pocela-dodnevna-obuka-skolskih-timova-za-podrsku-pravljanje-pilotiranje-planova-i-programa-u-zdk/
