This Collection of School Projects was created within the Project “Increasing the Reading Literacy of Primary School Students in the Zenica-Doboj Canton”, implemented in cooperation of the Pedagogical Institute Zenica and the Rotary Club Zenica with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Zenica-Doboj Canton. The Project lasted for three school years, starting with the 2020/2021 school year, when it was a particular challenge due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and ended in December 2023. The Project covered all 58 public regular primary schools in the Zenica-Doboj Canton, i.e. about 29,000 primary school students. The aim of the Project was to enhance the reading literacy of primary school students in the Zenica-Doboj Canton by strengthening and developing students’ reading culture and habits.
The Project included:
• professional development of class teachers and B/C/S language and literature teachers for the purpose of developing students’ key competencies and life skills such as critical and imaginative thinking, communication skills, creativity, originality, etc.;
• enrichment of the library fund for the implementation of the B/C/S language and literature curriculum in accordance with the needs expressed by schools (a total of 14,690 books were personally distributed to school libraries).
Direct participants in the Project were 116 class teachers and B/C/S language and literature teachers, who attended and actively participated in the online training “Developing Reading Culture and Habits of Primary School Students in the Zenica-Doboj Canton”, consisting of two modules and conducted by expert advisors for education at the Pedagogical Institute Zenica. The purpose of this training was to strengthen teachers’ competencies for their work on the promotion of reading. Between the two modules, teachers were tasked to conduct a prepared reading survey among students and, based on its results, design and start the implementation of a school project with activities focused on raising awareness of the importance of reading.
The Collection is a useful material available to all educators who want to enhance the reading literacy of their students. Continuous work on many of these school projects will certainly yield notable results in increasing the reading literacy of students in the years to come.
Project coordinators and trainers from the Pedagogical Institute Zenica were expert advisors for education: Sanja Hadžihajdić, Ramajana Kukavica, Aldiana Nuhanović and Naira Jusufović.
