The 12th Cantonal Turkish Language Competition for 7th, 8th and 9th grade primary school students in the Zenica-Doboj Canton was held on 9 April 2026, at the Primary School “Musa Ćazim Ćatić” Zenica, organized by the Yunus Emre Institute Sarajevo in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport and the Pedagogical Institute Zenica.
The teaching of Turkish in primary schools in the Zenica-Doboj Canton has a long tradition. It has been taught as a second foreign language since the 2011/2012 school year. The Zenica-Doboj Canton is the first administrative unit in Bosnia and Herzegovina in which the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, upon the proposal of the Pedagogical Institute and following the initiative of the then Turkish Cultural Center Yunus Emre Sarajevo, adopted the curriculum for Turkish as a second foreign language in primary schools, and approved textbooks for use.
In primary schools of the Zenica-Doboj Canton in the 2025/2026 school year, Turkish is studied by 1543 students, while a total of 64 students participated in the competition: 20 students from the 7th grade and 22 students each from the 8th and 9th grades. Awards were ceremoniously presented to the top-ranked students by the host school headmaster Safet Turković, commanders of the Turkish Military Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zenica LOT House, the director of the Pedagogical Institute Aida Salkić, and the coordinator of the project “My Choice is Turkish” from the Yunus Emre Institute, Mustafa Ilgar.
