In cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Bosnia and Herzegovina, the students at Primary School School “Ćamil Sijarić” Nemila, Primary School “Hamdija Kreševljaković” Kakanj, the First Grammar School in Zenica and the Second Grammar School in Zenica paid organised visits to the interactive exhibition “UMI Universe.Mankind.Intelligence.” in the European House of Culture and National Minorities in Sarajevo in December 2023. The exhibition was created in cooperation between the Goethe-Institut and the Max Planck Institute and aims to show that research in Germany enjoys a high status and is an essential part of German culture. The latest scientific achievements presented there are divided into five themed areas: the universe, the history of mankind, the brain, the anthropocene, and artificial intelligence.
Various themes are accompanied by appropriate staging stations to make them even more tangible for students, e.g. face morphing via monitor, display of distance in space using an atmospheric shell, installations which, through the influence of music, enable experiencing of different emotions or robot interaction. There are also various laboratory stations, and a 40,000-year-old bone flute can be actively tried out. QR codes refer to additional material in the form of videos, image galleries or podcasts. The students also received worksheets adapted to their language level, designed to further engage them during their visit to the exhibition. Working on the worksheets, the students had the opportunity to interactively participate in the learning and research process, at the same time harmonizing the exhibition themes with the materials of different subjects.
The most hard-working teams also received special prizes. Considering the multidisciplinary structure of the exhibition and its interactive approach to learning, the goal was to stimulate students’ critical thinking and research spirit, and to enable the inter-subject correlation and support an integral approach to teaching.
